Quantenrepeater.Link

Joint Project
Quantenrepeater.Link (QR.X)

Duration: 08/2021 – 07/2024

Secure fiber-based Quantum Communication

The aim of the BMFTR-funded joint project “Quantenrepeater.Link (QR.X)” was to develop Quantum Repeaters that can, for the first time, be deployed under real-world conditions outside protected laboratory environments. To this end, innovative approaches were investigated along three technology tracks – based on trapped atoms and ions, Quantum Systems in diamond, and semiconductor nanostructures – resulting in modular, system-integrated, and portable Quantum Repeater Components.

Starting from a common transmission protocol, the advantages of the respective systems were systematically compared, thereby paving the way for hybrid Quantum Repeaters that combine the strengths of all three technological domains. Another major focus was the research and integration of high-performance error-correction methods to compensate for transmission errors and further enhance the performance of the Quantum Repeaters. To test the technology outside the laboratory for the first time, the components were connected to several fiber-optic test links. In addition, during the course of the project, theoretical foundations and protocols for existing and future Quantum Communication Systems were further developed.
