Quantum Repeaters for eavesdrop-proof Long-Distance Communication
The BMFTR-funded joint project “Quanten-Link-Erweiterung (Q.Link.X)” aimed at the realization of hybrid Quantum Repeaters. The focus was on three technical platforms whose performance was to be tested on transmission links outside protected laboratory environments: Quantum Dot Systems, diamond color center systems, and a combination of atomic and ionic systems. Based on a common transmission protocol, the respective strengths of these systems were systematically compared to establish the foundation for a hybrid Quantum Repeater. Further focal points included integration with fiber-optic networks using standard telecommunication wavelengths as well as the development of theoretical foundations for future Quantum Communication Systems.
In Q.Link.X, for the first time, not only individual components of a Quantum Repeater were investigated, but complete and extended communication links based on different technology platforms were addressed. Particular emphasis was placed on industrial feasibility and engineering implementation. The project thus made an important contribution to the development of future quantum ICT systems in Germany.
